As a pet owner, it can be disturbing for you when you see ticks and fleas all over your dog’s coat. It does not end there because, not only can your pet get affected, so can your family. If your dog continues to rub herself against household furniture or even your carpet, your entire family may also become affected by ticks and fleas.

Of course, it is well within your right to choose modern medication or preventives to keep ticks and fleas at bay. However, you have your pet’s health to worry about, and not just because of exposure to ticks and fleas. Most preventives are full of chemicals with the potential to harm your pet. Fortunately, there are natural ways to keep them away without causing harm to your pet’s health.

How to get rid of fleas and ticks with Yeast

Yeast is not only effective in the kitchen, but it is also potent when used against ticks and fleas. Using yeast does not require too much from you. Just find brewer’s yeast and apply it on your furry friend’s coat. Yeast has some sort of acidity and that is what will kill the ticks or fleas on your dog’s coat. However, be mindful of your pet’s coat and ensure that the yeast does not cause it to dry out.

Keep her environment clean

Pests such as ticks and fleas love a dirty environment. So a clean environment reduces the chances of your pet catching ticks or fleas. Always remember to check the rest of your house once you notice fleas on your pet. The next best thing is to vacuum away the whole house as frequently as possible and even steam clean during the spring or fall.  Also, you need to keep your pet’s sleeping place vacuumed as regularly as possible and also wash her bedding using hot water.

Bathe your pet gently

Some pets don’t like taking a bath. The words bath time sends them scurrying under the table. However, bathing your pet regularly is a good way to keep off ticks and fleas. Just make sure that you do not bathe her too frequently because doing so strips her skin off very essential natural oils. Dry skin sets up a favorable environment for ticks and fleas.

Keep baths to once every month. If your pet is already infested, a bath twice each week for three weeks works well. Warm water works wonders just on its own because it makes it difficult for fleas to hold on to your pet’s coat. Try warm water and stay away from dog shampoo with chemicals. If you can’t find natural dog shampoo from an organic company, you can make one at home. Just add a bit of eucalyptus to castile soap or natural shampoo and only use this mixture to bathe her.

Natural oils help prevent fleas and ticks

There are several natural oils that can help you keep your pet flea and tick free. A small portion of eucalyptus, lavender, lemongrass, rose geranium, or lemon in water will keep fleas and ticks away from your pet. Also, one-third apple cider vinegar in about two-thirds of water after you bathe your pet is a good deterrent and will ensure your pet stays pest-free for a long time.

Keep your dog inside

Let’s face it, not every pet owner is good at keeping away pests from their dogs. One of the easiest ways for your pet to pick up pests is from the neighbor’s pets.  Although your dog needs to be outside for a few hours during the day, it is not wise to let her stay out for too long, especially when it is flea or tick season. Also, be sure to check your dog thoroughly even after a short walk through brush, grass, or wooded areas.

Fleas and ticks tend to shy away from a salty environment. For best results, try placing some salt on all the areas that your pet likes to lie on including the rugs, dog bedding, and the floor. Salt keeps fleas and ticks dehydrated so they will die quickly. If you want this remedy to work really well, place containers with some water and detergent around the house. If fleas or ticks dip in to cool off, they will get stuck because this mixture is slightly sticky. To ensure your dog is not intoxicated, try this method when you take her out for a walk or when both of you are out on a vacation.

Your pet’s health is important. One way to ensure your pet remains in good health is by keeping pests such as ticks and fleas away. There are many ways to do that including using products with chemicals. However, like you, your pet deserves to be treated with love and good care. Chemicals can cause more problems, so take a look at the alternative to go natural. For best results, find a natural remedy that works best for you and use it to keep those pests away.
