As we bid the summer goodbye, you are probably starting to look for Fall activities to do with your puppy. Puppies in Maryland, for instance, love fall season, and you can enjoy taking hikes together as you admire the changing colors. Here are some tips for taking care of your puppy in the fall.
Stay active with your puppy this Fall
After enjoying a fun summer outdoors, you should not let the cooler fall weather turn you and your furry friend into couch potatoes. Fall is a great time to ensure that your dog gets plenty of exercise, just make sure that you ask your vet the best activities for your puppy’s health and age. Whether you play a game of Frisbee at the park or take a brisk jog, make sure that you keep your dog active.
Not only will activity keep obesity at bay but it will also give you some bonding time with your dog.
Avoid outdoor hazards
As you have fun in the great outdoors, you need to keep an eye on what your dog is doing. Although acorns provide squirrels with plenty of nutrients, they are not great snacks for your pup because they can lead to GI upsets. If your pooch finds acorns tempting to chew on, you should discourage him or her from doing so.
Add Fall foods to your pup’s diet
Some people foods are unsafe for dogs, so you need to keep your puppy away from chocolate, onions, grapes, and raisins. Other nutritious foods that you can include in your dog’s diet are:
- Lentils – can be a great source of natural protein for your pup. Moreover, they are rich in vitamins, iron, and fiber.
- Turkey – with Thanksgiving right around the corner, it makes sense to include your dog in the turkey-eating festivities. Turkey meat is a great source of lean protein but you should not feed turkey bones to your dog, as they might lodge in the digestive tract.
- Pumpkin – this vegetable is low in calories and high in fiber. Its high fiber content will be great for keeping your pet’s digestive tract in great working order.
- Green beans – they are high in fiber and antioxidants.
Avoid over-treating your pup
When there is a constant stream of guests coming in and going out of your home, it might be tempting to feed your dog more than you should. As far as your puppy is concerned, you need to show restraint when it comes to the frequency of feeding. You also need to discourage your guests from giving your dog too many treats because it can lead to issues such as GI upset and pancreatitis.
If you want your dog to eat what the rest of your family is eating, make sure that you choose balanced and completely high-quality pet foods. Do not slip and start feeding your dog foods that are not nutritious or beneficial to his or her health.
Keep your puppy protected this Fall
Before you head out for some fall fun, you should ensure that your dog is vaccinated. Infectious diseases can be transmitted to your puppy from wild animals through muddy puddles in the fall. Be sure to protect your dog from heartworm, ticks, and fleas. Such parasites are more active during autumn and cause annoyances.
Ticks transmit serious infectious diseases while fleas cause harsh skin conditions. Make sure that you speak to your vet about the most effective and appropriate preventives for your puppy. Â
The above tips will come in handy if you are looking for ways to take care of your puppy in the fall. Make sure that you visit the vet for regular checkups.
