We all love our animals, and of course we worry about their health and wellbeing constantly. Therefore, it is not uncommon to want to take your animal to the vet every now and then when they seem like they could be sick. Frequent vet visits, however, can easily become very expensive.

Pet HealthAccording to the Huffington Post, a new company called Petnostics, founded by Stephen Chen, is seeking to make checking up on your pet quick, efficient and inexpensive.

Petnostics is an innovative $10 pet health monitor and screening kit. The kit uses colorimetric chemical test strips that, when coming in contact with the pet’s urine, change color.

Using a free smartphone app and camera, the strip’s results may be displayed as the app screens for potential illnesses like urinary tract infections or diabetes, as well as dehydration.

The new company and founder was featured on ABC’s Shark Tank and secured a $300,000 investment from Sharks Kevin O’Leary and Lori Greiner.

Chen plans to apply the technology to humans one day, as the specific algorithms used may be adjusted and incorporated in situations outside of pets.

petnosticsAlthough this product was not designed to completely replace vet visits, it has the potential to save pet owners a lot of money if they wish to check the health status of their animal.

The company is also in talks of partnering with a number of vets in order to “make sure that the products we develop and bring to the market are accurate, safe and effective,” Chen said.

It seems that Petnostics is paving the road to a future where pet owners have more control over their pet’s health than ever before, which is sure to bring pet lovers some peace of mind.
