History of Small Mammals as Pets
When were small mammals domesticated?
Guinea pigs were domesticated in 5,000 BC. So, they ’ ve been around for a long time. Even Queen Elizabeth I had a pet guinea pig! Hamsters were domesticated in 1939. They were first bred in Jerusalem with the original breeding colony exported to the USA. Pet rats didn't come until more recently,
Why were small mammals domesticated?
Guinea Pigs were originally domesticated for food. Yet others were worshipped and depicted in art. Eventually, they became good pets and garbage disposals as they would eat all the leftovers! Rats were domesticated for by biological researchers to ease handling of their experimental subjects.
How do these pets differ today?
Although the ancestors of today’s hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, rats, mice, rabbits and chinchillas were wild animals, the “pocket” pets we keep in our homes today are captive-bred and completely dependent on human caretakers for food, care, company and protection.
